Oracle offers Java SE Embedded products under an innovative licensing model. Development is free, but royalties are required upon deployment - production use - on embedded (non-general-purpose) systems. A flexible pricing model is being applied for such use, allowing for affordable pricing. Two important factors in this model are: the price per unit for embedded production use, and the annual volume of units (the number of units going into production per year). Royalty prices typically trend downwards with decreasing price per unit, and likewise with increasing annual volume of units. There are cases where royalties can be as low as in the order of approximately a dollar per unit.
